Rationale
Most Linux Users, I assume, like the Compiz-Fusion / Beryl OpenGL 3D Desktop GUI. I certainly do. If that is the case, why not have as an option, an Animated Desktop which is basically an Active Screensaver working "As Your Desktop."
Its already available through 3rd Party Utility Applications for both XP, Vista, and Apple's OS X Tiger and Leopard. I have it on my Vista PC and on my two Apple Macs. I love using it. It sure beats the drab, boring, static typical dull WallPaper.
Think about it? Wouldn't you like to be looking at the waves on a beach coming in and watching the wind blow the palm trees as a "Desktop" rather than looking at just a "photo or picture" of a beach?
You could play a CD of the sounds of a beach in the background so it would even sound like your on the beach also.
I submitted the Idea of using Video as Wallpaper (see my Profile). So +1 for your Idea from me, 'cause it's not far from your Idea to mine. Even from the Developer Point of View. ;)
So upvote my Idea as well if you like. :)
Desktop is drawn by Nautilus. It would be nice if no external tools will be added, just Nautilus patched to understand more formats, including video and animated png.
Great idea! Static wallpapers are boring and why not have an animation? The specs of the machines nowadays surely would support it.
Something to do for your 500$ gfx card.
Considering what beautiful screensafers are in Linux, this would be a great thing. (check out the real slick screensafers, based on OpenGL)
