Idea #3853: Better Support for USB ADSL Modems

Rationale
Especially for eagle series:
Sagem Fast 800, Sagem Fast 908, Comtrend ct 350, Comtrend ct 361, US Robotics USR9000 Sureconnect, TELINDUS ND 220 ARESCOM, Elcon 111U, Aztech 206U, Dlink DSL-200i , ARESCOM NDS1060, ECI B-FOCuS 150A II, Aethra Starmodem, Huawei SmartAX MT810 ID, Teledat 300 usb, Zoom 5510B, ASUS AAM6000UG
I am aware that drivers for these are non-free, but Ubuntu should at least "tell" users how to obtain these drivers and how to install and use them (either manually, or via ubudsl application)
When you first start ubuntu, usb adsl modem is recognized and in hardware list, but it simply does not work. No information is provided on how to enable and start it, so users have to fly back to windows, and search for hours on forums, rarely finding what they need.
In addition, there are users that use pppoe connection via adsl, and all information on the internet is for the pppoa usera. Br2684 package will solve their problems, so it should be installed by default (it is a 7 kB package)

agree, many essential conectivity packages are not included qith the live-CD (be it Br2684, gnome-ppp, etc.)

I fully support this idea.
i'm gone mad every time i'v got to install USB mode Alcatel Speedtouch 330.
Think this:
in third-world countrys (like where i am) MOST of the ISP, provide USB modems when the client contract Internet.
if you provide support for these USB modems, I think GNU/Linux, and ubuntu himself, will be beneficiated ( will be in better position)
Sorry about my english
This site it's a GREAT idea, fill de demand, and you will win (and that's better for the world, for everyone)

As i see, many people in Argentina have the same problem whit this cheap USB modem, included me... I don't know if Ubuntu support it, because it's obviously impossible to install the modem's restricted driver without a fully operative modem.
This is an important feature. in the betas of Gutsy i've seen (if i'm not wrong) a method to install manually the proprietary drivers of USB modems, but i haven't see anything of that.

Bad support of Bewan ADSL USB is the reason why my mom still uses Windows... she doesn't know much in computers and she's willing to get a solid OS, but she needs her internet access too ;)

And the Huawei SmartAX MT810 that Telefónica. Although I must say, it's come a long way since the first time I had to make it work(on Dapper drake).

Actually the Sagem F@st (that I have) can be installed by the eagle-usb drivers, and IS NOT NECESSARY TO COMPILE them for be Wired!
But that's a good idea, all the world has not a Router... ¬¬''

@fari:
I agree, I have it too, and install it without a problem, but firmware, and br2684 drivers have to be downloaded elsewhere. Alo, ubuntu itself doesn't even say what is wrong, so users with no experience just say: no thanks, i'm back to windows, it all works with a click there...

Thomsom Speedtouch should be in that list. The lack os support to usb modems is one of the biggest issues in Ubuntu.
This idea should have more votes!!

All usb adsl modems should be there, but it is just too much to name them all... :)
And you're right, this idea should have more votes :)

It is a frustrating problem. I am new to ubuntu and i have to go back to windows only becos of the smartax mt882 modem. I can only use the ethernet access when in ubuntu and i won't be able to use internet protocol television when i do that. I still haven't figured out how to get the usb drivers for the modem..... I've been searching for almost 1 month.. I have almost given up on it..

I must say I am really deception about his issue.
the but was reported on 2006 and still there.
I am new to linux but not to computers. It is really taking for ever to do such a simple thing. I know I could just go down the shop and buy a new modem, but I am totally against that idea. The modem works perfectly on windows.
If I cannot get it work I will go back to Vista ( I hate having to say that after all I have say about windows... but at least works)

Support for Huawei SmartAX MT882 USB is highly required for users like me in India. I have installed Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS.

I wrote 7 steps "blondy-style" (means easy one - for newbyes ;) HOWTO for Zyxel (or other Connexant chipset) USB ADSL - but in Russian on russian Ubuntu forum.
If it could help - I can translate it to English and place somewhere..
|
|
|
|
@ ais77 Well, that would be nice. I have used several english howtos with mixed success. At last I found a manual on the french forum which made it work, but WPA and WEP had to be disabled.
|
|
|
@ ais77 Forget my comment above. I mixed up two modem stories here. The ADSL USB modem did work after loading some FWACRU (or something like that) on boot.
The other story obviously was about a wireless PCMCIA card from Thomson:

my experiences with ADSL and USB modems were so painful which i really quit - btw, it's so easy to use wireless with Ubuntu i truly recommend people connecting wireless hubs in their ADSL connections instead of using directly USB modems instead... (of course, assuming nowhere in the world that restrictive traffic limit still exist...)

Stupid Zyxel winmodem... now that I have a router-modem I have no problems, but I think USB ADSL modems should have a better support.

I've just falled in love with usbadslmodemmanager. It workes perfectly.
