There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette.
I am not a fan of the default theme of Ubunut, and that’s what I first change in a fresh install(witch is easy!). But still, I do believe the brown colour is very clever, cus it makes the Ubuntu desktop stand out compared to others(like all the "blue" ones). You will know right away that the “screen shot” you are looking at is an Ubuntu desktop. With all the attention Ubuntu is getting on the net these days, its smart to have a theme that stands out.

Latest wallpaper for Ubuntu(in Hardy), is very nice and imho., very unique. The first Ubuntu wallpaper that I truly like.

When it comes to the suggestion above I believe they have already done it, look here; https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork?action=show&redirect=ArtworkTeam They could stress it more with making a competition, so I vote it up.

Agree totally that it is an excellent opportunity to get feedback from creatives, many of whom obviously have a real understanding and mastery of the tools they use. Some of the stuff on gnome and kde look is simply stunning, and the standard rarely slips below very good. I think it would be a very good opportunity for creatives to be allowed to use the tools of their choice as well. OK it would be nice to have the thing done in OSS - but if we are into getting honest feedback about the why's of creatives not using OSS then forcing them to seems a little self - defeating. And PNG's or SVG's only - perhaps a separate category for both would be fair?

And my instinctive reaction to seeing this post. Tears of joy that I may be spared the orange and brown stuff...Pretty harsh colour scheme to assault a newbie with...makes me shudder to think about it...

Perhaps other creative community's should have the opportunity too (I can't name any sites, but there are properly more sites like DeviantArt out there) and the event should be promoted on various Ubuntu related sites, and social news media.

Actually, I really like the default theme and wallpaper in Ubuntu - sure it could use an update, but it doesn't deserve the harsh comments it so often receives.

About the colorscheme/designs, it is my opinion that the artists should have absolutely free hands to submit whatever they like.
A few thoughts on this.

1. If successful, it will tap into a creative pool much larger and diverse than what we have now.
2. The winner will be chosen by Shuttleworth and Canonical, so there is no real risk involved in having 'outsiders' contribute.
3. I'm not sure exactly how DeviantArt will be engaged in this challenge, perhaps an announcement on their forums?
4. Will the artists be asked to create actual functioning themes, or only mock-ups of themes?
5. Some grand-price or recognition for the winning artist may be in order to further spark interest.
6. Limiting the artists to open source software is just crazyness. The result must be the deciding factor, not the means.
7. Don't be too strict when it comes to color schemes and such. Give the artists more freedom and they just might surprise you.

k99goran:

"3. I'm not sure exactly how DeviantArt will be engaged in this challenge, perhaps an announcement on their forums?"

The intention is that the competition be announced on the front page of their site, and promoted via social media. Artists will be asked to either submit works (combinations of wallpaper, application theme, and/or icons) with the string 'ubuntu810' in them, or we'll make a special DA category for entrants.

"4. Will the artists be asked to create actual functioning themes, or only mock-ups of themes?"

Only working themes will be eligible to win. While mock-ups of application themes may be added to the category, they must be turned into GTK engines by a particular cut off date in order to remain eligible to win.

"5. Some grand-price or recognition for the winning artist may be in order to further spark interest."

Yes. The intention is to provide credit in the theme name 'Foo Bar by Joe Blogs', as well as prizes.

"6. Limiting the artists to open source software is just crazyness. The result must be the deciding factor, not the means."

As discussed in the blueprint, we're not limiting to Open Source software, just files editable by Open Source software - PS is fine, just no layer effects.

"7. Don't be too strict when it comes to color schemes and such. Give the artists more freedom and they just might surprise you. "

Agreed. We've preferred to emphasize that themes be distinct rather than keeping with brown/orange/burnt orange/beige of previous ubuntu releases.

I imagine that those who changed the brainstorm status from "in development" back to "new" had a good reason to do so, for whatever reason that this idea didnt work.

The developer comment though is quite vague and the whiteboard doesnt seem to give any information on what happened to put a halt to this.

I think that the frustration evident in some of the more recent comments by those who believe this to be a great idea might be calmed by a bit more feedback.

Perhaps what stopped the idea from going ahead could be addressed by some people here so that in the future this could be put back "in development".

Anonymous Developer >>> "In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it."

Democracy is scary isn't it!

Seriously though, there are so many positive comments. I'd let the Ubuntu community vote on the top 64 chosen via DeviantArt and then have the final prize list of top 8 chosen by the Ubuntu core team / artwork team. Often a crowd choice seems to be a bit limited and safe whilst professional artists/marketeers can choose something to stand out but remain distinctive and indicative of the Ubuntu brand.

Are the devs scared that all Ubuntu users put together will make a bad choice?

I suspect the reason this is not happening is that DA is a commercial operation (with free and premium membership, like flickr) that could benefit a lot from the project and Canonical want paying. Possibly DA see it as a resource eater and want paying too. Something along those lines.
