Idea #3639: Native Support for Mouse Forwards/Backwards Thumb Buttons

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #120: Mouse Button Extension.
Written by xvedejas the 7 Mar 08 at 00:24. Category: Hardware support. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
I own a Razer Diamondback, and two of the buttons I can't even use with Ubuntu. It's not vitally important, but it should be an easy fix for someone who knows what they are doing. Anything that's another step closer to hardware compatibility for Ubuntu is a good thing.

I agree.
I have MS IntelliMouse Explorer, and I had to manually edit xorg.conf, this if far too difficult for most users.

How about adding BTNX to Add/Remove under system? Would you look there for a package to enable extra buttons on your mouse?

Try http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3236/

It's up to the manufacturers to release drivers for that hardware.

I'd love to see this too, I have a Logitech MX610

This was such a pain to sort out in the past, easier now. I still carry the xorg entry around on a stick.

actually, the additional buttons work without a lot of work, but most applications just don't make use of them (atm, only firefox uses them on my machine)

there are solutions, to map them to key combinations, but thats imho just a dirty hack

usefull cases imho:
nautilus (back and forward)
gaim (switch between tabs)
media players (fast back/forward)
...

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "ButtonMapping" "1 2 3 6 7"

Thanks everyone for your support; it now works natively in the Ubuntu Hardy Beta!

You can configure extra buttons of your mice with BTNX, and this is probably a duplicate of idea #120 : http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/120/
