Sometimes it is better to have one program do one thing and do it well. Maybe an option to open the current image in a photo editor would be nice though.

I would say firing up GIMP is just as easy, but perhaps that's overkill.

More and more functions (like red eye removal, resing, cropping, colour balance, etc) are embedded in gThumb. For simple functions, I just fire up gThumb, GIMP is too 'heavy' for me.

Now we have "Edit image" button which is on the Toolbar of EOG. This button opens Shotwell Photo Manager.
