Description
As it stands, getting compiz to work on a new Gutsy install is hit and miss. The entire process is highly dependent on video card drivers and compiz is enabled by default.

I disagree - I tried, painfully and unsuccessfully, to install Compiz Fusion on openSUSE, which takes a lot of effort and manual configuration. Ubuntu gave me the choice of Compiz Fusion, Metisse or "None" when I installed from the Live CD - so I'm not sure what you are saying about it being enabled by default - and when I chose Compiz Fusion and installed the proprietary driver, it worked perfectly, no fuss at all.

Since posting, I've remembered that those options were not in Ubuntu, but were in Mandriva, which I tried out before I ended up here.
Still, there is a "none" option in Appearance Preferences > Visual Effects.

Installing Compiz in Gutsy is not impossible but certainly isn't dead easy.
I have opted to promote another post that suggests Compiz be installed by default. I think that's a more general option and addresses this current suggestion in a more effective way.

I use a program called "envy" which dowloads the most current driver for either ati or nvidia and gives me my wobbly windows within 5 minutes. I've used it on 3 machines and it's perfect on all of em.
Maybe make "Envy" a more supported program, possibly adopt it as part of restricted drivers.

Compiz is easy to install, so easy in fact it's installed by default. The difficult lies with setting up the drivers. This isn't Ubuntu's fault, blame lies firmly on the shoulders of the hardware manufacturers. ATI has learned this and opened their specs, give it time and the radeonHD driver will take care of ATI users. For nvidia users, you're choices are pretty much use the binary drivers, hold out hope on Nouveau, or complain to nvidia until the release the specs.
