Not very good for a laptop (without separated numpad). But if they was an option.

This can already be configured in the BIOS.

install numlockx

Marchombre wrote on the 7 Mar 08 at 08:16
I suppose that Ubuntu know if our computer is a laptop or not so it should be possible to do it only for Desktop, no ?

Auzy wrote on the 7 Mar 08 at 08:29
I dont see the point.. I personally don't use numlock at all..

If you want numlock enabled in the installer, you'd want it enabled 24/7, so should use the bios.

-1 Whose voting for this honestly? It breaks normal computer standards.. Lets NOT force users to put up with numlock if they dont want to.

And no, you cant just automatically detect laptops, at least not reliably anyway

Maybe qwerty (or qwertz) users don't see the point, but on azerty keyboards, the numbers of the main part of the keyboard are accessible with shift key.
So most french desktop PC users prefer using the numpad.
Spreadsheets users also would want that.

Furthermore, I don't see the problem enabling by default since
1 - nobody (?) uses the numpad for another purpose than numbers if they also have the arrow pad (which all 101-102-104-105 keys keyboards have).
2 - the laptop issue is generally not an issue, as the "Fn" key is usually needed to access the numpad. Other laptops activate the numpad as soon as num lock is on (on mine, it is a possible option in the BIOS, but I believe it was not the default behavior), I believe they are a small minority, or aren't they ?

But one way or the other way, there should be a GUI for chosing the num lock state at boot (like in KDE, btw).

the laptop thing is a big issue. you will usually get garbage if numlock is on. (like: th5s 5s n4036c2) should be especially annoying if you try to log in and don't see you're typing garbage.
it would make for a fine config option, though.

This should be an option somewhere

i have it enabled in the bios, but when ubuntu turns on numlock gets turned off by default.

endeavor wrote on the 7 Mar 08 at 14:44
I don't believe the BIOS has any control over the state of the numlock once the OS takes over.

leandro.miranda wrote on the 7 Mar 08 at 14:53
Every time I install any distribution I have to modify some files to let the (numlock ON) I always irrito with that.

nunquamsecutus wrote on the 7 Mar 08 at 17:18
Could this not be some nature of install setting? Somewhere in the setup the system asks you if your computer is a desktop or laptop (or various synonyms). Surely numlock isn't the only thing that would benefit from this knowledge.

Auzy wrote on the 8 Mar 08 at 08:10
Yeah, keys do get messed up like terror said,

And on my keyboard, I can use them as home, end, pgdn, pgup keys, which I do do.

Don't break a lot of peoples current setup. I like my numlock light off when I work also.

Finally, I'll use the "its to be more environmentally friendly".. Numpad light uses power to run. Tsk tsk tsk.. Turning it on by default would accellerate global warming

Kingoftherings wrote on the 8 Mar 08 at 17:57
I think there should be an option during install, or after the first login that will turn num lock on be default. My password has numbers in it, and I prefer to use the number pad to type it in, and it's annoying when I start punching in numbers and nothing happens.

I agree.

What if the OS remembers the state of the NumLock key upon logout and automatically puts it in the same state when that user logs back in or when the computer starts?

Perhaps not, but if we set the BIOS to a certain behavior the OS should respect that setting once it takes over, To to otherwise is not only rude (as if the OS knows what we should want better than we do) it's also very frustrating if we constantly have to change the state of a key lock button every time we boot up. It could be enough to make a person roll back to an older version, just to get what could be the "appropriate" behavior.

I'm in for the easy-to-use GUI to set numlock state for gdm and gnome

MarkGyver wrote on the 25 May 08 at 01:54
Because of the laptop issue, I voted against this idea; however, I am strongly in favor of the OS getting it's initial Num Lock state from what the BIOS sets it at -- even Windows does that....

arnel wrote on the 8 Jul 08 at 16:01
I agree that the BIOS doesn't always work in keeping the numlock on. I think there's a value that can be switched on and off in a config file. Here's my experience:

My profile was originally created in Centos kde and in that environment, there is a setting in Keyboards where you can choose "NumLock on KDE Startup". When I switched to Gnome on Ubuntu, my profile brought that setting over and my numlocks still come on by default. Other new users that I have set up in Gnome on Ubuntu do not have their numlocks on by default.

I've been trying to find the config or init or default file where this setting was turned on in kde, but have been unsuccessful. Is there anyone out there familiar with kde configs that may know where this setting is? It appears to be read and used by Gnome, I just can't find it.

v1nce wrote on the 17 Sep 08 at 19:41
Non qwerty users really want an easy way to set the numlock.
There should be a checkbox during install process to set that.

shawe_ewahs wrote on the 25 Sep 08 at 09:53
It is interesting that Ubuntu ask to user if need autoactivate the numpad or not. It may be that the problem inverts, now problems are with Desktop PC, if it activated by default, the problems are with laptops without numpad separated.

I think you guys are overcomplicating things. If you vote for http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/6605/ everyone wins. This idea is a silly argument, it doesn't help everyone.

Mine means everyone wins.

not all bios allow numlock configuration
