Idea #350: ZFS support

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #375: Support ZFS file system .
Written by jamessnell the 29 Feb 08 at 00:51. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
ZFS is clearly an emerging leader in filesystems. As it stands it's difficult to get functional at all on Ubuntu (probably on any Linux machine). If ZFS could be gracefully ported along with some fantastic gui tools for managing storage pools and snapshots another helpful point of innovation would be present. I just hope Sun doesn't have a license that's blocking for this?

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #350
Written by jamessnell the 29 Feb 08 at 00:51.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #350 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

They do.

True, It is open source, but can't be included in the kernel due to the GPL. But maybe as a proprietary module, not in a default install.

Well, the restricted driver manager exists to deal with that sort of thing. Of course another "obvious" solution is to reimplement ZFS. Go openZFS! Or make some kind of compatibility layer for Solaris, like Wine. HA HA HA HA. (*Don't do that please, I'd rather not waste more CPU cycles*)

Really, Linux Software RAID or LVM seem like hacks that give similar functionality. So, they could be used, perhaps just need some assumptions applied on top of their use to guide users in exploiting their value.

There's always Btrfs

There are several ZFS recommendation already. Use the search feature and vote for the one that has the most votes.

smbm, btrfs is definitely something that should be supported, however it's not close to ready. ZFS is pretty well ready to go, biggest challenge seemingly is licensing, but Ubuntu has had some crafty means around those issues in the past.

The key is to get the users this functionality that currently has a solid implementation elsewhere plus the gui tools to easily make use the features.

Anything less should only be highly optional and not main-stream Ubuntu.
