Idea #3499: windows app/script that will tell you if your hardware is compatable with ubuntu

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #4444: Hardware Compatability Tester.
Written by ignus the 6 Mar 08 at 10:13. Category: Hardware support. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
we could use a small windows app or script (possibly run from the install cd like the other windows apps) that would tell you if your hardware is compatable with ubuntu. it could inform users that they have unsupported hardware or that they may need to use restricted drivers. this could make use of the ubuntu hardware database.

it may also be helpful to add user comments to the hardware database like "i use this graphics card and it works well" or "this winmodem is not supported"

This is very similar to my suggestion here: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3471/

I'd also like to receive notification by email, so that I know I can round to Aunt Daisy and install ubuntu on her machine. This is better than having to check every time.

an exact duplicate of my idea http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/2862. I'm not reporting it as such because mine got reported as dup of a dup of a dup which was "better hardware database" and I'm guessing the original idea gets the credit. This is quite different, for a windows tool.
