Description
I'd like to receive an email when Aunt Daisy's hardware is compatible and I can install ubuntu knowing it'll work well.
This would basically tell the user when to switch the machine from Windows to Ubuntu. I would do this for various friends and family machines and install when I know it's not going to be a problem.
Presumably this would involve running a small program to collect hardware data and uploading that data to ubuntu.

why not just make a program that tells you directly if the system is compatible? seems a lil cumbersome to send an email....
but an extra option in the boot menu of the live cd that checks for hardware incompatability problems might be a nice idea

Most of the real trouble with switching is figuring out how to use a whole new software base (unless they only use pidgin, firefox, and openoffice on their other machines).
This hurdle is not one that anyone could give a clear cut line for you - if they use some wierd software and hate it when their interface changes they will never be ready unless someone sets them up just right. There will never be a magic bullet moment when they insert a vanilla CD and all is just the way they want it.

The kind of scenario I have in mind is: I'd like to know when Aunt Daisy's hardware is compatible so I can go round and help her switch. I don't want to have to keep checking her hardware.

Already implemented I guess, the LiveCD is designed for that purpose..

i disagree with the email thing, people should get a list of hardware they can buy that works now, not wait millions of years till their winmodem works....
people will not try ubuntu in the first place.
"oh i'll wait for my scanner to work first before trying out ubuntu"
or
"psss, this crap Ubonto is incompatible good thing i didn't install it"
an ubuntu compatible store is what i propose:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3575/
but i do agree with the rest of the idea and a program to test configurations and upload profiles. The program should also suggest where to get compatible hardware.

oh, and you should not wait for your hardware to work, you should buy what works.
make sure when your friends n family upgrade their hardware to get ubuntu compatible stuff. You need to educate your friends to come to YOU for advise, or they will never get 100% working hardware like you propose.
but i agree "what works" should be found easier.

@madjr
I don't think you should be imposing what *you* want on other people.
If someone already has hardware and is willing to give ubuntu a try, I say good on them and we should help them all the way.
