Idea #3330: Start Calling it Ubuntu Gnu/Linux in documentation and promotional

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #1492: Must Change the name.
Written by dracus the 5 Mar 08 at 13:45. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Sounds arbitrary but with the addition of Gobuntu as an Official Derivative we need to show the Free Software Community that we are serious about our commitment to freedom. Also this would show that we value the work they have done to make Ubuntu possible. I think its not to much to ask to add a "Gnu/" to things which already exsist its just a few keystrokes.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #3330
Written by dracus the 5 Mar 08 at 13:45.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #3330 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Which, while laudable in theory, would be the quickest way to turn off non-techheads; and they are supposed to be the people Ubuntu is aimed at.

"GNU/Linux? Is that like Linux?"

I don't know why the word Gnu should turn anyone off. I mean it's a name its not like we are calling it Black Hole field dynamics or something.

and the idea is a very bad one from a marketing point of view.

ubuntu is not a standard version of linux, its the version for human beings, people who have a hard time understanding there is something to work on a computer thats not windows, and those people arent gonna catch on to something called "gnu slash linux" (though just "gnu" would be a very catchy name, but lets face it: thats never gonna happen)

while i know that the FSF deserves its props, i think thats better done in the community, not in the communication with "normal" people
