You have some great ideas, but please keep in mind ubuntu does not make most of the applications you submit ideas for (timevault, and banshee for example). Very rarely do ubuntu developers change an application's code to add a feature (usually just bug fixes). Feature request for these kinds of projects are better placed at that projects bug tracker. (And please do file a feature request, I like your many of your ideas)

not for Bashee but for gnome

This is implemented in the unstable release of Banshee.

However it doesn't work well...

Auzy wrote on the 5 Jun 08 at 01:30
Thats probably because its an unstable release jrusinek, which means it will wok better in the final..

Either way, +0 or -1 for me. I feel that simple media players like banshee and Amarok don't really contribute much to the future of linux. They aren't really cross platform, and their support for extensions and theming isn't awesome.

Songbird is the future for us, and it really is the only thing that can compete against the features available in winamp I'd say.

unimatrix wrote on the 5 Jun 08 at 23:50
@Auzy: I agree with you, but you are forgetting that Amarok2 is cross-platform. And while the idea behind Songbird is very nice but I still think it's too much... browser!

Auzy wrote on the 6 Jun 08 at 01:45
Winamp has a browser too, but its easy to ignore. If Songbird has implemented the browser the same way as winamp, you should be able to just disable the browser plugin

Songbird a future?! funny...

the only xul apps people like are firefox and probably (almost dead) thunderbird.

if app starts so long, people start irritating and they remove such sotware.

and, songbird doesn't look native - it's simply ugly.

@jrusinek:
Songbird can look very pretty, but that's still not it.

@Auzy:
Winamp = Audio Player + Browser Component
Songbird = Browser + Audio Player Component

ubunteando wrote on the 4 Jul 08 at 14:17
DOES THAT MEAN THAT BANSHEE WILL BE DEFAULT PLAYER IN INTREPID IBEX????

PLEASE ANSWER YES :D !!!

Auzy wrote on the 5 Jul 08 at 00:05
Thats true unimatrix, but what I mean is that you can disable the browser views so you never know its there. And the beauty of the browser base is that extensions and such can use Javascript extensively, so you can create amazing themes and extensions.

@jrusinek. So make a GTK theme.. Duh. You only need to ask yourself 1 question only to settle this:

"Is banshee good enough, that you would use it in OSX and Windows instead of other offerings?"

I'd say not likely.

Btw: Banshee they probably wont be able to add cross platform theming or cross platform extensions easily. THats the beauty of XUL. And seriously, there are only a few XUL applications out there so far, so you cant go dissing it. But the latest version of thunderbird had over 600,000 downloads on download.com alone anyway. So it is successful.

PS. Don't you have any visions of what you want the future to be? Do you want something with an insanely powerful base, or do you want something that is built upon a much weaker foundation? Thats the beautiful thing about the Mozilla platform. It can be used as a mail client, webbrowser, audio player or carPC frontend easily. It can do anything you want. In fact, the reason why you find more developers aren't using it, is mainly only because many don't realise you can do more then make a browser.

Songbird is nice but it:
1) Is not native
2) honestly is a little cluttered
3) has no video library option, I don't want to have a video of my cousins wedding right after listening to the song "I hate it when videos pop up right after my songs, if only there was a seperate video library".
4) Is not what I want, I don't want to browse the internet with songbird, that is what Firefox is for, which does a WAY better job at it. The whole web browser thing is wholly unneccesary.

(I will say that it is the best opensource media player for windows and osx)

@Auzy, You only need to ask yourself 1 question to settle this:
Is Songbird good enough, that you would use it in Linux instead of other offerings? (Such as Banshee?)

Darius. Not yet. However, once watched folders has been added (due november), I will even throw out winamp on windows, because then I can have something which is just as powerful, cross platform, cross platform plugins.

And I will even change my car PC to linux possibly, as it will finally have a good player which is powerful enough.

And the beauty is, that if I code a plugin for linux, it works in windows automatically normally.

However, I NEED watched folders, at the very least on my carpc so I don't need to manage the files in the library.

The fact it has a webbrowser doesn't change much, in fact, it just makes it more powerful because plugins can then recycle code used for javascript and stuff.

To end with the equalizer problem, just install a system wide equalizer, then you don't have to worry about banshee's equalizer not working!
