Idea #327: Allow Editing Gnome Menu Items from Inside the Menu

Written by rouge568 the 29 Feb 08 at 00:39. Category: System.
Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
As of now, if one wants to add/edit a menu item, one has to right-click on the gnome menu title bar, select to edit the menu, and then navigate through another hierarchy. It would be much simpler to add an option to "edit this item" or "add a new menu item" through right-click when you are navigating the menu normally.

edit: Also moving items in menu just by drag and drop.

Yeah, the alacarte is really not a very usable solution. It is sluggish as well even on high end computers.

Strongly agree! Windows' programs menu is better than Ubuntu's because of its context menus and dragging and dropping. It saved a lot of time.

Yes, I would like to see "Rename" and "Delete".

Ew, this needs to be done in gnome-panel :( (which is a C gtk applet)

-1. Ubuntu keeps my menu organized. I should be able to sit down at any Ubuntu workstation and know where to find a given application.

Windows does a terrible job of this - the Windows Start Menu is always a nightmare of folders and unused software. It should not be up to users or software developers to determine how their software is started.

The existing menu editor is just annoying enough to keep people from seriously modifying their menus. That's a good thing.

I disagree with qaaq, because i think its up to user how to arrange his menu especially on desktop computers or notebooks used by one user (its his computer and it may help to increase users comfort and productivity). In business environment this should be up to admin (if he allows menu editing or not), because sometimes its better to have consistent environment.

Btw this idea looks like a duplicate: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/9702/
