I fear that bears the potential for problems, because very often the updateprocess needs interaction.
Of course you could pass the -y argument, but I think this is an insane idea especially when in combination with full-upgrade and a devel release. And I'm sure that will happen a lot.
So, unless the updateprocess is greatly changed from now, this method isn't very sensible.
cheers.

I don't think about this problem and the "-y" argument is not the solution for sure...
You are right.
But I don't think to use these "feature"for full-upgrade/dist-upgrade but only for simple update.
Thanks you for your comment!

Hum, except for some kernel updates or Xorg updates, you don't even have to log out to use the updated version, just to quit and re-launch.
So, why do you think you should do it at shutdown time?

Windows XP and Vista work like this: updates are automatically downloaded in the background, and when you switch off your computer the updates are installed right before the computer switches off.
It would be a nice feature, but I see one problem: Installing updates in Ubuntu requires you to type your password (because administrator privileges are required to install the updates). When / where would you type this in? Should it work like this: Click Shutdown, you get a message "There are updates, enter your password", updates are installed and computer shuts down.

Yes Xp and Vista works the same and I think it's a good approach for a desktop system.
For the password , yes you have to insert again before shutdown in the exactly way as you said.

Perhaps just allow the user to Shutdown while Update Manager is running; this should delay shutdown until Updates are completed automatically.

i agree with hoellp that this is probably not a good feature to have.
if we were to have it, however, there should be a check box "install updates first", so the user can check that and select whatever action (logoff, suspend, hibernate, etc.)

I dont really see the benefit of this. I've never really encountered a problem with stability after an update. So the reason must be for performance. Maybe updates should be more backgrounded instead of this?
Maybe even run on screen lock?

I'd say that it would be very annoying if I had my desktop start installing when shutting down. I would rather install it in my own time. Also, in the update configuration, there is already the option to automatically install updates in the background.

Adding checkbox "Turn computer off when finished" in update status/progress dialog can be easily done. And it solve problem from my point of view.

I was thinking of zbynek's idea myself:
"Turn computer off when finished" option for the update dialog.
