Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
Ubuntu uses only GNOME apps by default, buts sometimes, many KDE apps are better than the GNOME counterparts, but none is installed by default examples: amarok, k3b, kget, etc.

Who cares if the app comes from KDE or GNOME?

We want a better system, nomatter where the app comes from.

I care, because KDE apps don't blend well with GNOME, and when the user changes the theme and notices that the KDE apps don't change, they will complain that they are all broken.

That integration will be achieved this way:

Many KDE applications require some or all of the KDE libraries which slow down the system and even more when it uses a lot of IO. On a live-CD that slowdown could make it unusable.

dark is 100% correct. Furthermore I'm sure I'm not the only one that prefer Audacious and GnomeBaker to Amarok and k3b.

If you want to use KDE apps, use Kubuntu (or install KDE in Ubuntu) or live with the implications of a "mixed" setup.

I've seen some people calling for K3b to be ported to GNOME and GTK (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=604894). I don't know feasible that is, but I'd be happy to see that happen as well.

Mixing creates serious usability issues as they work and feel different. It should never ever be done for any reason.

[followup to rawsausage's comment] ...by default maybe but nowadays most PCs have enough RAM and computing power to make the extra load of loading qt libs barely noticeable. I think it's good as it is, let people who are happy to mix, do their own mix.

I think it's a problem only on the live-cd, not on a desktop with enough ram and cpu power.

Once the look and feel issues are solved, I really couldn't care less if an app is qt or gtk based. I just don't care, I want the best tool for the job.

I guess the decision of "best" is eventually based and popularity and reputation. K3B and Amarok happen the have both, and I am sure there are some gnome apps that should find their way into Kubuntu by default as well).

I take great care to make sure I don't install KDE (or even QT) apps because I don't want the weight of the extra libraries.
