Idea #30572: improved dropdown lists

Written by prakreet the 21 Feb 13 at 08:10. Related project: Gnome. Status: New
Rationale
New users find it difficult to see which was the previously selected option once a dropdown list is clicked.

Users feel that the previous selection is lost and they have to select a new one. They try to memorise the previous selection before even clicking a dropdown because of the fear that it will be lost once they click the dropdown. I think there is something seriously wrong here.

Solution #1: a tick mark to shows the previously selected option
Written by prakreet the 21 Feb 13 at 08:10.
Show a tick mark to the right hand side of the selected option in a dropdown. They can always see the previous selection and it reassures them that the previous selection is not lost.

This is a simple mockup of this idea

Solution #2: Grey out the selected option
Written by clel the 28 Mar 13 at 15:02.
One could simply use a grey selection for the currently selected option and the normal orange selection for the option, the cursor is pointing at.

"Users find the UI difficult to [navigate or understand]" seems more like a usability bug for bugs.gnome.org than a Brainstorm problem.

Have you filed an appropriate bug report?
Or mentioned the problem on the Gnome-devel mailing list?

Yes, this is a usability improvement. I haven't filed a bug report for this anywhere else.
