Idea #30522: Home folder restore

bug This idea was marked as being in development the 9 February 13.
Written by brewster the 31 Jan 13 at 00:36. Related project: Live CD installer. Status: In development
Rationale
When something goes wrong and the only solution is a reinstall, the first thing I think of is having to reconfigure all the apps that I had installed and, for me personally, to restore my emails to thunderbird.

Selected solution (#1): Home folder restore
Written by brewster the 31 Jan 13 at 00:36.
I think it would be awesome to have a feature in the ubuntu installer that will ask for a location of a backed up home folder and from it download, install, and restore settings for programs that you had.

I use Ubuntu one for storage of my data. So my data is always backed up and I need not worry about crashing of Ubuntu. More over where ever I go my data is available for usage.

Regarding the programs and settings, you have the software center to re-install in a minute.

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/ubiquity-preserve-home shows that it is being considered and I thought I'd heard it had been implemented (read the comment not just the description).

If anyone knows for sure if it's implemented, please post.
