Idea #30503: minimizing windows in Unity is an ordeal

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #27318: New way to minimize in Unity.
Written by linuxlisa the 22 Jan 13 at 13:57. Related project: Unity. Status: Not an idea
Rationale
I really don't like how the "minimize window" function is implemented in Unity. The only way to minimize a window is using its minimize button in the title bar.

At the moment, if you want to minimize a running application that has multiple windows, you have to minimize each single window of that application one by one, clicking on the close button of each of its windows. Very annoying.

There should be an easy way to minimize an application altogether with one single action.

Solution #1: Show entry 'minimize' in quicklist list of a running application
Written by linuxlisa the 22 Jan 13 at 13:57.
Left-clicking on a launcher icon of a running application "spreads" all open windows of this application (if it has more than one window). Middle-clicking opens a new window of that application. Right-clicking shows the quicklist list of an application. So none of these mouse button clicks is available anymore for minimizing.

So why not just add an additional menu item 'minimize' in the quicklist of a running application?

On top of that, the minimize function should also work by left-click on an app's launcher icon if there is only one window of that app. Then the spread function will still work if there are multiple windows. I find this intuitive and logical. Because so far, if an app has only one window and you do a left-click of its launcher icon, nothing happens. For people who usually/mostly use only one window of an app (e.g. tab browsing in Firefox), the task switching would become much easier and faster.

Additionally, minimizing windows of an app should also work via shortcut/accelerator, e.g. Super + CTRL + M (minimize current window of current app) and Super + CTRL + Shift (minimize all windows of current app).

You seem to have multiple solutions to the problem (all listed in solution #1). Please split them into their own solutions so that users may vote on each implimentation individually.

Unity has an active, ongoing process of designing improvements. You can participate directly in the Unity design process - Unity welcomes lots of different types of participation.

A very good explanation of how to get involved is at
http://design.canonical.com/2012/02/the-unity-design-process-and-how-you-can-pl ay-a-part-in-it/ .

Since Unity discusses such improvements internally among participants instead of through Brainstorm, I'm closing this idea in Brainstorm.
