Some one should see if Google would be interested in adding a desktop search for Ubuntu. Make it an addon for Nautilus.

YES!
One of the very few things I miss moving from Windows is Google Desktop Search! I could always count on it to find lost documents and emails for me.

Um, okay, I feel really stupid now. Google has Desktop for Linux. They even came out with a 64-bit version.

So- maybe it could be a default? :)

I really hope it won't. First I don't really like Google and I certainly don't want them in my personal files. And second, I'm very happy with tracker in terms of results, just the presentation and workflow is still very rough.
I'd love to see a thorough and deep integration of tracker into the system, that we can use it from the cli to the 'open file' dialogue box.
Don't look for a new search daemon when the actual one isn't fully utilized yet.
cheers.

I agree with Hoel. Tracker (and Beagle, I'd like to add) make a just-as-good-if-not-better job at indexing files than Google Desktop does. A nautilus plugin could be made to make the ones who prefer Google's desktop search engine, but I don't think it should be a plugin.
