Idea #300: Install a better scanning program by default

Written by picpak the 29 Feb 08 at 00:24. Category: Multimedia. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Seriously, xsane terrifies me. I'm completely lost each time I use it. It reeks of that poorly designed early-90's hacker-app feel. There's Scanner Utility in Add/Remove, but it doesn't let me scan all of my scanner. Can we please have something similar to the scanning programs of Windows?

Yeah Xscan is horror. gscan2pdf is very nice if you want a pdf. But something similar for graphics (and pdf) would be great.

are you kidding????
Xsane is the best scanning program i've ever seen!
windows scanning programs usually sucks!

what are you talking about???

Truefire wrote on the 8 Mar 08 at 22:37
Although @mastro is very emotional,
I agree.

As soon as I plugged in my EPSON Stylus to Ubuntu,
it had the drivers to, and did, scan and copy and image
in less than 3 min, using xsane.

With the included Windows app, it took about 10-15 min.

I'm afraid the person who started this thread needs to
simply explore the menus of the program, that's fundamental.

It's possible that he/she is scared of Outlook Express/Thunderbird and would demand an easier alternative.

I honestly don't mean to be rude, but some simply expect
a Media Center program for everything.

It would be nice, but it would need a complete desktop interface overhaul- not to mention program engine overhaul.

Who, me? I love Thunderbird. I've never been a fan of Outlook though.

Xscan is a true nightmare, REAL old fashion, terrible UI, early 90's look. PLEASE, give me something more pleasant to work with!!

It reminds me of gimp. Back when I first tried gimp out, I had no Idea what I was to do. Gimp is REALLY powerful, but the interface in confusing. It's the same thing with xsane, REALLY powerful, but interface is confusing. I think that We should have gnome-scan by default because of that.

AlexandreProkoudine wrote on the 4 Apr 08 at 15:56
XSane is quite OK. But let's wait till gnome-scane will gain more features and then see if it's worth replacement.

@travist120

Maybe it's just your tasks were not worth running GIMP? I mean, some people try using Scribus for doing things they would have done faster in OOo Writer without learning principles of DTP ;-)

AGREED! XSane is sooooo ugly and confusing. It may be poweful, but you can surely present powerful features in a more intuitive way which is consistent with the rest of the desktop.
