There's no easy way to kill the noise GDM so even after you disable all your personal sounds.... :-(

As aleander points out you can disable it in

System -> Administration -> Login Screen -> Accessibility

It's an important access feature so blind users can know when it's ready to log in.

Here you can disable all sounds in GDM.

Of course, this may not count as 'easy' :-)

The worse thing is that I can not mute the computer during the boot-and-login sequence.

Not being able to mute during login is my biggest problem too. So often I am listening to music on my laptop whilst working at home, and then take it to a lecture to make notes, and realise that I left the volume turned right up. The only solution is to plug some earphones in before logging in or just put up with having several people stare at you for a few seconds.
