Allowing to deleting/edit comments or ideas is really vital.

if it has no comments.
if it does, then the author could flag it for a moderator to delete it.
if you edit your idea and it has comments it should have a notice that it has been updated.

I disagree with this idea. The archive of bad ideas can be used to prevent future similar ideas, especially when users discuss the in and out of such bad ideas in comments.

this gets a 'new' tag and it's a duplicate of duplicates...

Agree wih Yunfeng.
While I would love to save myself the embarrassment I often felt when I had opened my mouth too early, in this context, this is simply wrong.
But some form of duplicate management etc would go a long way.

@Yunfeng. "The archive of bad ideas can be used to prevent future similar ideas, especially when users discuss the in and out of such bad ideas in comments."
It's nice when your point is also an example.

I disagree. I think we all learn mainly from our mistakes. To hide them under the rag is not good educational practice. Posters should learn to be responsible for their comments, therefore I don't like the idea of fully deleting one's posts. On the other hand, allowing editing is highly desirable - it means one has learned his lesson.

Even a bad idea can trigger a lot of good ideas. Filtering ideas is not what a brainstorm is about. If you're embarrassed by your own idea, blush and move on to another page. No one forces you to look at it ever again. ;)

In retrospect and after reading through the comments I tend to agree now. I guess some things are more important than saving face.

I have posted a similar idea and I wish to delete it but the site won't allow it... hmpf!

I agree in general with everyone in the sense that good ideas can come from bad ones. I know often in business when brainstorming throwing crazy stuff out there is encouraged. You can always filter later.

Agreed as well. Dont delete bad ideas, it's a brainstorm.
But you should be able to "mark" yours as bad ideas, just make a new category "bad ideas" where the editor can move them into....

Bad ideas will be marked as such by voters, no need to be dictatorial about it, eh? Sometimes not changing stuff is also okay ;)

I'd really love to be able to delete some of my shocking ideas.

Bad ideas should be hidden after a while, I think there's a proposal for that already.
People are already posting duplicate bad ideas, archiving the old ones doesn't help.

It would be nice if I could delete my own submissions... especially if I submitted one then realized it was already implemented, already available, or just a mistake.
Maybe it could be deletable for a given amount of time after submission, then made permanent after that amount of time is up.

look at Idea 9675
For that purposes it should be possible to remove it's own ideas.

OK I know why this would be good, but if you delete it someone will come along and post similar idea again.
For that reason I decided that it would be better to Lock your idea. This would prevent a duplication and you could still lock prevent negative votes to some extent. It would also be good to be able mark it your self as done. I had some ideas of this kind.
I will not vote on this idea, but I hope that some of you might vote on my idea, which is (for me at least) better.
0 for now... (Maybe some of ideas are really just screaming for deletion)

There are no bad ideas in a brainstorm.
Besides, when posting an idea, you make a promise to your voters that their vote is counted. Removing ideas is removing votes.

It's effectively already possible to delete an idea. Just edit the description to be blank, or something like "Idea has been withdrawn"
It is unfortunate that this method loses a lot of the benefits of a bad idea: duplicate prevention and learning from others' mistakes, in particular.
Also it would allow people to pad their "overall quality" stats, for those who care about that sort of thing. And even for others (like me), it would reduce the meaning of that statistic.
