Make Ubuntu look nice

There are people out there who love the way Ubuntu looks, but I think the vast majority of people hate the appearance. Just look on digg for a rough idea of what the average tech savy person thinks of Ubuntu's looks. They hate it.

You can't please everyone, but I think you should be aiming to please a lot more people than you currently are doing. The fact any plans for a new theme were dropped from 8.04 kinda sums up Ubuntu's attitude towards appearance.

You don't need to have transparent glass effects or anything like that, but you need to at least come up with a colour scheme that works. People just don't like the brown and orange. It might somehow sum up the ethos behind Ubuntu and its african roots, but it just dont make for an attractive computing experience!

If you want to become a mainstream rival to Windows and OSX then you need to look on a par with them and frankly you don't.

I agree. One of the things I've always found with both gnome and kde is that a lot of the themes contain some really unnecessarily large widgets and unpleasant colour schemes. I've always thought that a more compacted set of widgets would look better, with smaller buttons and a generally more constrained, sleek appearance.

As for the colours, the orange looks fine to me, but I've always found the brown tint of the GTK windows themselves to be a little overkill. Something a little more like the new clearlooks theme would look far fresher and more appealing.

Yes Please! Anything but barf brown by default would be awesome! It took me hours to figure out how to finally change all of the screens away from the brown. BUT I still see a flicker of it every now and then when I boot up....still drives me crazy.... DIE DIE!

Sorry but i have to agree.

Sociological studies have shown that the prefered color of people in general is blue. (not extraordinary : it's the color of the sky, the ocean...)
And as it's a cold color, it doesn't 'excite' you/your eyes.

Brown is the color of the earth, that's right, but in people mind, it's also the color of another thing they often see in their toilets. Not very positive.

Changing your desktop (or your whole theme) is incredibly easy. And Ubuntu's is darn slick compared to just a couple years ago.

Post your contributions to the various theme and desktop-picture websites, and let the community vote with it's downloads.

Stop foisting your color choices on me, and trying to bloat my distro with eye candy.

I like the brown, but I always change it to something I like even more...

Brown is ok as a color. Oh and wait. If you need your OS to look good "out of the box", you don't need the choice of Linux do you? Go grab a mac.Linux is for us to customize.

Brown is a neutral color. Also, in Ubuntu, it is more orange/peach, being warm colors, that look welcoming.
