Idea #29: Smooth shutdown experience

bug This entry was marked as not being an idea the 7 July 11. If this is a bug report, please use the Ubuntu bug tracker.
Written by vintik the 28 Feb 08 at 15:01. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Not an idea
Rationale
As far as I understand, when shutting down, Usplash still flickers a moment. In any case, for Xubuntu and Kubuntu (and perhaps other derivatives too), the Usplash still isn't displayed during the full shutdown. If this is possible without being a very hackish solution, it'd be awesome.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #29
Written by vintik the 28 Feb 08 at 15:01.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #29 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

I've added a link to the Blueprint (wasn't easy, this site is still a bit buggy ;), to which this might be added.

I believe this has been fixed with the gutsy release. (or at least it seemed to on my machine)

vintik wrote on the 28 Feb 08 at 22:13
@keen101 - nope. I know that it was improved in Gutsy for Ubuntu, but Xubuntu (and I suppose Kubuntu too) still have an ugly white-on-black screen unless you shutdown from gdm.

Sometimes this depends of external things, for example: if i have the Avant Window Navigator (OS X like dock), when i shutdown my computer, the screen turns black and the dock space turn to another color... it isn't really smooth, at all.

Maybe, i don't know, this could be fixed by the distro.

This feature xubuntu really needs.I expect to see a polished shutdown like ubuntu. The current one with the text is not upto standard of xubuntu IMO.

No idea. I have always just pressed the power button for 5 seconds. Anything that shuts down slower is broken. Never seen any flicker.

In 8.10, the flicker appears to be gone. Is this issue still prevalent? If not, I'm going to mark it as implemented.

Please file a bug report for this issue, if you still have it.
