Idea #28619: To simplify moving a laptop or similar between locations with proxys

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #2813: Network profiles.
Written by malcolmdw the 4 Oct 11 at 07:46. Related project: Network Manager. Status: New
Rationale
The problem is that if you want to move a laptop, or similar, from a location with a proxy to a location with a different proxy or no proxy you have to go into Proxy settings, select the appropriate location and enter in your password to set the new proxy, that can get annoying if your changing twice a day.

Solution #3: Smart Proxy Config Switcher
Written by AmanicA the 11 Oct 11 at 15:25.
I use a local (on my laptop) proxy (squid) to be able to easily switch the effective proxy settings for all my applications. I use some programs that are not automatically updated by the standard Proxy settings tools, so I configure everything to my local proxy. Then I have to small bash scripts to switch between my two squid configs and restart squid - this can be made into launcher icons.
I have been thinking to somehow set up a script that gets called when a network comes up that will detect which proxy settings must be used and automatically switch to it. It can possibly ping some addresses and maybe even check mac addresses to detect where you are. In theory all this can be wrapped in a nice configurable application...
