Idea #28412: Include a "hide" icon function for a crowded panel

bug This idea was marked as being not considered for implementation the 24 November 11.
Written by dollarside the 16 Aug 11 at 12:13. Related project: Unity. Status: Won't implement
Rationale
Basically it would be great to have a "hide" function for the icons in the panel.

The reason is because for netbook users, there is indeed a limited space for information in the panel. The panel includes the menus for the running program in focus, and the other icons such as Tomboy notes etc.

I have 7 icons in my panel not including the power icon, date, and user name. When I run Gimp, I may not see the whole list of menus.

Solution #1: Include a hide function.

Probably a 'hide' icon or something similar to that which will slide the icons away when clicked, and slides out when clicking the 'hide' icon again.

Solution #2: Individual icon hide function
Written by Baroo the 13 Sep 11 at 15:56.
Each indicator menu would include a "hide icon" option so that you could control their visibility individually. This would also then require an "unhide hidden icons" option somewhere. Maybe in a right click panel menu?

Hiding (stacking) is already included in Unity.
The idea should have explained why the current system is inadequate.
