Description
Using an external sound card plugged via firewire is really painfull today.
Some people give up Ubuntu for this only reason.
A better out of the box support would be great.

indeed,
I love using linux but if i cant get my firewire interface working soon then its a deal-breaker and back to windoze for me.

in all honesty its nuts to be spending 20 hours of your life trying to get ONE part of your setup working. thats 20 hours i could have been practicing music. with windoze/mac you just plug the thing in and it works.

i desperatly want to use UbuntuStudio as my main recording station but
its way too much work and way too much a hit or miss affair.

im afraid to say that it seems like a lot of people dont seem to realise that these are deal-breaker issues for users and will drive people away from Ubuntu and Linux in general.

I third that. I also want to use UbuntuStudio and this is holding me back. I can't remember how long I spent trying to get my M-audio Solo to work.

seems theres a lot of people in this boat with us.
it begs the question: "Whats the point in having Jackd/Ardour/Rosegarden and all the realtime kernels in the world if you cant even get a soundcard to work?"

Priorities people....

I've been affected by this problem too. I own an M-Audio FireWire Solo and have been trying for about 6 months, on and off, to get it to work with Ubuntu. I've read guides, been thru' the motions and have spent countless hours on this. I have been able to get some functionality out of the thing but I have a somewhat strange set-up.

I want to route audio from the Ubuntu thru' the sound card to a Pioneer DJM700 mixer and out again to monitors. I can go in the opposite direction but that's not what I want.

At any rate, I've completely given up on the sound card and will probably end up buying a USB one to replace it. But this issue is certain to be turning away a considerable number of potential users of Ubuntu. I hope it sees some attention.

Yup, I know a fellow that gave up on it because it didn't have enough support for it.
