Description
The default Firefox ships with defaults that aren't exactly ideal for speed. If Ubuntu would default to slightly improved defaults (Pipelining enabled for example) it would speed it up and make it more ideal.

Pipelining can cause problems in some cases. Furthermore, FF 3, which is already in hardy, should address most people's speed concerns.

What mephcpp said.
Perhaps you should take a look at Firefox 3. It's quite fast.

FF3B3 is really fast, apparently B4 will be even faster in terms of javascript execution.

I think, that MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO environment variable should be set/unset depending on installed locales. With pango support firefox runs much slower.

I agree with dburanen its off for a reason. and the new version of firefox is supposed to be faster and less resource hungry.

Look at that, I didn't see the firefox post. I posted one just now.

I have checked out Firefox 3 and yes it is much faster. So I guess this could be a null point.... And swiftweasel is great but its O3 optimization so its not portable between CPU archs.

A firefox problem IMO, and besides, FF3 is supposedly much faster.

epiphany is a good and fast gnome integrated firefox replacement for slower systems. install it by default so people don't get confused by epiphany (the game) vs. epiphany-browser packages.
People don't seem to want it as THE default but imho it should be installed anyway.

I know there is a security risk to doing this but you could mimic how IE integrates itself with the OS. A patch that would allow Firefox to directly grab system resources and thus speed up Firefox.

epiphany is pretty fast.

There is also Swiftfox. They have a repository and .deb files. The browser is tailored to specific processors (which makes it faster) and comes with all speed knobs turned on.

swiftfox use harder optimization flags to build firefox source code.
Epiphany and Firefox - at least on Hardy - share the same rendering engine : gecko 1.9, in its beta5 version.

hot-rodding firefox will bone modem users. optimization is one thing, but leave the config alone.

epiphany with gecko 1.9 engeene (the same in FF3)is faster than FF3. If there would be compatibility with FF plugin i would put FF in recycle bin :D

This idea should be closed.. FF3 technically completes it, and the race isn't over yet.
They've made it faster, so FF3 fulfills it..
