Idea #27189: Possibility to choose favorite programs while installing

Written by crism the 15 Feb 11 at 10:06. Related project: Live CD installer. Status: Already implemented
Rationale
While unexperienced users will most certainly like the upcoming installation routine in Natty Narwhale, it does not give experienced users the possibility to customize their system as they want. Some may find evolution a good mail client, while others prefer thunderbird. Same thing with Firefox vs. chromium and empathy vs. pidgin.

It would be nice to have some sort of mechanism that lets you decide what basic software you want to install. Clearly it has to be discussed where it makes sense to let the user descide (like email, webbrowser, IM, audioplayer) and where it does not make sense (like command line tool for file compression).

Solution #1: Provide expert installation
Written by crism the 15 Feb 11 at 10:06.
There could be an expert installation, that lets you choose you favorite programms for common tasks like email, browsing, IM and audio playback. While the standard installation installs the Ubuntu standard software (evolution, firefox, empathy, rhythmbox) there could be a button "Expert installation" that let's you decide.

This will be sufficient for unexperienced users, as well as for those, who want to customize their system a bit more while installing.

Experienced users running up against the limits of the beginner installation tool on the LiveCD should try a more advanced install tool. The Alternate and Minimal installers do already offer quite advanced customization options. The Minimal installer also significantly shortens download+install time *and* customization.
