Provide a list of known good hardware combinations for every Ubuntu release, or at least the LTS ones. Although this idea is similar to the existing idea of 'Certified Hardware', specific combinations of hardware that work together should also be provided. 'known good' would mean that all the essential steps involved in installing and running ubuntu work as expected:
- installation works without surprise or error
- *all* hardware is recognized and supported
- suspend/resume/wireless/video all work as expected
Although hardware testing can be an expensive, arduous process, just a few hardware combos from the major manufacturers would provide a solid base to build on.
Links could be provided to pre-filled shopping carts at online stores. When building new systems, one would simply choose a base spec that is known to work, taking out the guesswork in buying a new system. These lists would obviously also be of great benefit to system builders, making it easier to start on the path to becoming a Ubuntu certified system builder.
