Rationale
hi there!

for making ubuntu more flexible i´d suggest that u provide an extreme small base system which has no apps installed but all the config tools and great hw-detection as we know it...

the user/installer will then be able to choose the apps that he REALLY needs...

It shouldn't be like this by default, but maybe an advanced mode.

Would be useful, something like the Debian 8mb installer.

I think it already exists, but I can't remember what it is called.

This would be useful.
+1

If it already exists maybe making it more visible in the main page it would help.

Unlike JEOS (Just Enough Operating System), it should include the basic desktop (KDE/GNOME/...) though. Just NO apps.

Isn't this what Ubuntu-server actually is?

ebrahim wrote on the 3 Mar 08 at 20:20
It is already out here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

Minibuntu! XD like ebrahim said, this pretty much already exists.

How about editing minimal to include more command line utilities and compatibility with a ton more hardware ?
This does need to happen.
