Idea #265: Include GUI for Adding and Editing Keyboard Shortcuts

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #163: Sytem-wide shortcut configuration.
Written by picpak the 29 Feb 08 at 00:03. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Currently the default window manager (Metacity) has no suitable GUI for adding and editing shortcuts. There's Preferences>Keyboard Shortcuts, but its features are limited. Currently one either has to set up xbindkeys or dig through gconf-editor just to set shortcuts for certain apps.

Xfce has it, KDE has it...why can't GNOME?

It's been a pain in the ass not to have the ability to set ctrl+escape as a shortcut to "Main menu", as it is for start menu in Windows.

Current Keyboard Shortcuts GUI is confusing and it is difficult to set anything. I am not sure what are future plans for this from Gnome side, but it is simply not suitable.

It is not obvious that you can easily search for commands so it would be much better for users to add visible filter field to window.

Another idea is to add possibility for custom commands (programs). Just add another group “Custom” and button “Define” for defining them. There should be also possibility to delete those custom commands (there could be another button “Remove” visible only when you select one of custom commands).

I hope that this is making sense! Please add some relevant comments and vote for this (so we could see some changes soon).
