Idea #26453: Numerous Preferences and Settings are so disorganized.

Written by azhar the 15 Nov 10 at 01:36. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Not an idea
Rationale
At this moment, the numerous Preferences and Settings are so disorganized. It's not visually appealing, and some(especially newbies) might find it confusing.

Solution #1: All Preferences/Settings should be properly organized in one Window.
Written by azhar the 15 Nov 10 at 01:36.
The Preferences and Settings should be categorized. They should be easily accessible. They should be arranged in a convenient way, where users(especially newbies) don't feel lost.

All the Settings/ Preferences would be categorized(in one window) as follows:

PERSONAL- About Me, Appearance, Assistive Technologies, Keyboard Shortcuts, Main Menu, Screensaver, Language Support, Time & Date, Personal File Sharing, Preferred Applications, Startup Applications, Ubuntu One, Windows

HARDWARE- Keyboard, Monitors, Mouse, Sound, Printers

NETWORKING & WIRELESS- Bluetooth, Network Connections, Network proxy, Messaging & VOIP, Remote Desktop, Network Tools

SYSTEM- Power Management, Computer Janitor, Disk Utility, Hardware Drivers, Log File Viewers, Login Screen, Startup Disk Creator, Synaptic Package Manager, System Monitor, System Testing, Update Manager, Users & Groups, Software Sources

Of course, the classification/ categorization of those Preferences need not be exactly as I put it. Besides, one more category(OTHERS) could be added if the need be.

I experienced some problems when I tried to add a link to a proposed screenshot. Here is the link: http://ubuntuforums.org/picture.php?albumid=2104&pictureid=7004

I think this is what you wanted (see your solution)...
Or do I misunderstood you?

Idea #80: "Clean up Preferences and Administration".

@ Vahan: Yes, now the picture is displayed. Great?
Uhhh, I'm sorry, but what did you mean in your last comment…?

1. Take a look at following solutions: #17: "Develop according to the examples below", Solution #18: "Alternative sub menus".

Aren't they similar suggestions?

2. If moderators decide that your suggestion isn't similar to these ones maybe it would be right to add this solution in the Idea #80: "Clean up Preferences and Administration", so we can see solutions of the problem concerned with Preferences and Settings in one place. It will make the voting more effective.

Vahan,
I could not find "Develop according to the examples below".

But I did find "Alternative sub menus".
However(correct me if I'm wrong) Solution 1's idea is to reduce the number of available settings, or atleast merge them.

Mine is somewhat different: I want to see those settings/ preferences categorized properly, and also be able to access them from only one window, instead from a drop-down menu(as it is currently).
