Idea #26383: Make Dual-boot menu on Linux (GRUB) easier for most users to understand

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #21: Professional-looking bootloader.
Written by shane.halloran the 6 Nov 10 at 15:06. Category: Usability. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Not an idea
Rationale
If a user has multiple operating systems booting with GRUB, it can sometimes seem confusing which one is which. For example, I think Windows Vista shows up as Longhorn or something, and sometimes there are many entries for Ubuntu.

Compare this to the Windows-based dual-boot menu. If you install Ubuntu via Wubi, for example, It just asks you 'Windows 7' or 'Ubuntu'.

Example of a current GRUB menu: http://beconfused.s3.amazonaws.com/media/2008/02/Booting-up-to-Windows-Vista-or -Ubuntu-using-GRUB.jpg

Solution #1: Investigate the Burg loader
Written by shane.halloran the 6 Nov 10 at 15:06.
The Burg loader seems to be more graphical and easier to understand. http://code.google.com/p/burg/wiki/Screenshots If the user uses Ubuntu most of the time, one screenshot shows Ubuntu loading straight away, with the option of stopping Ubuntu loading when the Windows logo is selected instead.

One issue I could see with this would be: if it's graphical, users would expect to be able to use the mouse. I would say something like:...
Press 1 for Ubuntu.
Press 2 for Windows 7.

...would be possible if you can't use the mouse before booting.
