Idea #2629: apturl in Evince with PDF files

bug This idea was marked as implemented the 25 September 11. Available starting Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron.
Written by antistress the 3 Mar 08 at 01:33. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Implemented
Rationale
Apturl is very useful for documentation concerning Ubuntu.

Firefox and Epiphany use it and allow to easily install a software from a documentation website

There is also documentation in PDF files, and therefore Evince should also cope with apturl

Selected solution (#1): Auto-generated solution of idea #2629
Written by antistress the 3 Mar 08 at 01:33.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #2629 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

You're going to create GNU/Ubuntu with such things...

You're not working upstream and you do not care about others.

jrusinek, are you just trolling or do you have a point? Either way, it worked on me. Googling around, I don't see that apturl has been embraced by the Debian community. Apturl seems magical, but it's not a complex technology -- Debian could easily have it if it wanted it.

Not everyone is thrilled with apturl; the method with which you use it is "too easy", that is, it appears to be something which you would have to really study to see if it's a security concern. That choice should be at the level of the computer's admin, not at a distro or application programmer's level.

I voted for this idea, but I think it should be implemented as an add-on package for Evince (and acroread if possible); not as part of the base package.

So, I think if upstream cared about apturl, we should work with upstream on this idea. But this is Brainstorm, not the place where any of the real work is being done.
