I've been playing with all font-related software in Maverick, and I see there's a bunch of fonts and even a fonts directory in the Software Center. That's great news.
But, besides the most necesary (system-used fonts, eastern-alphabet fonts per user's choice) most of these are simply optional, decoratives, or aimed at the font-fan as I am.
On the other hand, most Font Managers (Fonty Python, Font Matrix, Font Manager...) are designed aiming to handle fonts in the user's font folder, with the rationale of trying not to mess with the system's set fonts and being able to cope with huge lists of different types. And while they can do things with the others, the results are often dangerous...
For example: the Software Center has a package (ttf-aenigma) with 465 decorative fonts. Great. But if I go ahead and install it, I have no easy way to select, and more importantly, de-select them to be shown at the menus in all the apps.
(I can sudo-cut & copy them manually to my home folder, of course... but that's the point: not having to.)
