Description
Ubuntu is missing (though has SEVERAL Command Line versions available) an idiot proof backup system which will do a few things:

1) Backup my /home directory
2) Backup any SQL server data if it exists
3) Create a script so I can re-install my current applications should I need to do a bare-metal install
4) Provide a bare-metal solution so I can recover from a drive crash or my own stupidity.
5) Interface with Mozy or other online backup provider and give me a list so I can subscribe to free or near free solutions so I don't need a pile of DVD-RW or CD-RW's.
5a) Perfect time to PARTNER with mozy to provide the software they don't seem to have time to create.
6) Did I mention all of this should be idiot proof. Too many newbs or even first time computer users do not know how to back up or what that even is. Too many people I know have lost all of their data because of stupidity, a lightning strike or just a plain drive crash.

The closest thing to what you would need, IMO, is bacula.
It is idiot proof for a admin. Very straight forward. If you dont know what you are doing, a "newb" as you suggest, then there is little that can be done for such a person, its time for the newb to learn some stuff. If learning is not an option, you need a it person.

There is also.
rsync,
pybackpack - A user friendly file backup tool for Gnome
sbackup - Simple Backup Suite for desktop use
simplebackup - Simple backup tool

Mozy cost money. The average home user would do better with an external drive.

Most of the applications do not allow for MySQL or what ever SQL version you have to be backed up, UNLESS you know where it lives, know HOW to kill the server to backup the datafiles.

Mozy is free for the first 2GB. Anything more than that you need to pay for. So be it, it is still cheaper and easier to use (set it and forget it) than most others out there.

As for the user learning.....well, Yes, they should. I am an IT person so I am used to teaching. Unfortunately, when the user is lost, they "YES" you to death.....I can not get them to sometimes admit they are lost. They would never understand Disaster Recovery....there are TEAMS of IT people dedicated to this stuff......

I would like an app that learns my system and makes suggested backup selections based on my installed software and server/services as well as allows me to choose an offsite service, CD, Tape, etc, etc

Thanks for the input

QuickStart, a script hosted on ubuntuforums.org by mdpalow does this quite well: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=613462
