Description
Everytime that I want to type something up in spanish, theres always some crazy hoops that i have to go through. Be it dead keys, or inserting a symbol every time i want a letter with an accent, it's all around pretty hard.

Windows had the alt + that made it really easy to do so. I think it would be really cool if Ubuntu had a way to type in stuff like that. I'm not sure exactly what the "official" name for this kind of thing is, but hopefully my idea makes sense.

Isn't Keyboard Layouts setting enough? It should have the same layouts as windows available. I've got alt+letter for polish layout (same combinations as in win.) by default and dead keys available anyways for other languages.

the keyboard layouts settings don't work well, it's a nightmare to get these kind of accents with dead keys: ê. It's still not working for me, this is exported from openoffice.

You can use Ctrl-Shift-U in GTK applications.

You need to make sure you have set up a compose key:

Add a line to the keyboard section of your xorg.conf like:
Option "XkbOptions" "compose:rwin"

Then you can type é pressing in order:
compose (rwin)
'
e

This will also allow ç ş ß (s s) ı (i .) € (= C) ¿ (? ?) ± (+ -) ¥ (= Y) and many many more.

You can add the "Characters bar" by right-click on your main "Menu bar".

What do you suggest that is easier than typing ' followed by a to get á?

Also if you prefer, you can use the USA International (AltGr dead keys) layout to type them with Right-Alt key + the character.
