Description
And also, why do my mouse settings get reset when I change video drivers?

I have an AGP Radeon 9600XT 256MB, and every time I change resolution it doesn't take effect until I restart. And it strangely keeps reverting from 1600x1200 to 1280x1024. My second monitor settings never seem to work correctly either.

I know this issue is specific to at least ATI drivers, but it might just be Radeon-specific or at worst I guess it might just be me.

Is this an idea or a bug report? Looks more like the latter to me.

As for the issue at hand, I have an AGP Radeon 9550 (basically the same chip as yours), using the ATI driver (the fglrx driver just keeps freezing my computer). If you're using gutsy, try removing the xorg.conf file entirely (backup!)

@aschuring: is it a bug? I thought it was the intended functionality, where should I submit it to if it is a bug?

Also, if I remove the xorg.conf, won't that destroy all of my other custom settings (mouse, etc.)?

That is an xorg problem i think.
If I remember well, that is under development for the next xorg version.

You don't have to restart, you have to logout and login again.

@Eldmannen both require closing all open programs which is unacceptable, IMO
