Idea #2499: Try to find the proper application/codec for every file automatically

Written by blogage.de the 2 Mar 08 at 15:47. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Try to find the proper application/codec for every file automatically. For example:

If someone tries to open an .exe file, ask if he/she wants to install Wine.

If someone tries to open a .rar file, ask him/her if he/she likes to install the package "unrar".

I like the same approach on video codecs in Ubuntu. I really would like to see this approach be expanded to other file types and system drivers, if a new hardware was detected.

PS: Sorry for my bad english.

Sorry, apparently I didn't used the correct key words. Where can I find this topic so I can vote for it?

Good idea, I added it to my suggestion.

This is a good idea. A model can be the OS X utility 'open' There is a tool in Ubuntu called 'file' which does a small portion of this already. It needs a lot of improvement, but could be used with a lookup table to find the application to run for any given MIME type.

Here, like elsewhere, proprietary codecs need to come with at least a short warning and at least a cursory reminder of the relevant open standards. Proprietary codecs seem to be the last hurdle keeping OSS from snowballing on the desktop.
