Description
I tried to install both 7.04 and 7.10 on an older pc, and found that the 'Forward' button in the installer was inaccessible. A scrollbar when necessary would be awesome!

You can not select another boot options - usually VESA driver?

This is especially a problem when installing on EeePCs. A resizeable installation window shouldn't be that hard to do.

I agree, but here's a tip while this is not solved: alt. If you keep alt pressed and left click and hold on a window, you can drag it easily, so whenever you have huge dialogs, this trick can solve it quite nicely.

+1

On my eeepc, I tried to alt+drag to see the bottom, but compiz doesn't let you drag up and off the screeen. I had to change to metacity just so I could use alt+tab to move the installer window up so I could see the rest of the dialog.

I don't think a layperson would take the time to figure this out.

There is the the "alternate" desktop cd which uses a text based installer.

But, to build on your suggest a little more, maybe the installer could resize your desktop to a "Virtual desktop" of 1024x768 when it detects a lower resolution.

Happened to me, was stunned at first, didn't know how to get around it.

I just blindly used 'tab' 'Enter' hoping it selected "Next".
I just upgraded my hardware and thought I would get a great res at setup. Was using the Hardy Heron Alpha 3 disc for install.

Running:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
GeForce 7025 / NVIDIA nForce 630a
2.6.24-10-generic
Viewsonic PT775 17 inch Color Monitor

gavintlgold wrote on the 29 Feb 08 at 02:18
The installer should either default to a smaller size or detect if the res is too low and resize... I encountered this problem a while ago before I discovered the alt-drag feature. Coming from windows or mac, the alt-drag is unknown (I love it a whole lot :) ) so people just think they can't do anything. Worse even, they might not know what to do next, not seeing the forward buttons and thinking it's a bug (which it is, basically). This might turn them off from using Ubuntu, even if other graphics cards/monitors don't have this problem. +1!

I think the alternate version covers this. Not many users should have this problem and those who do aren't stuck as they can just install via ncurses with the Alternate disc.

I had the oppossite problem. The resolution started off so high I could barely read the text. It took five minutes to find out how to change the screen resolution so that I could finally install ubuntu.

This problem is easily solved by scroll bars. I don't how anyone can create an installation GUI and ignore something crucial as a scroll bar.
A scroll bar will let it work on any resolution.

The proper solution was to replace the timezone widget, as the old one was causing ubiquity (the live CD installer) to have a large minimum window size.

This was done in ubiquity 1.7.9 and is present on the Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha 5 and later daily live CD images. Ubiquity now defaults to a 674x434 window.

I reported this BUG a few years ago, and it was just fixed in the latest version of Hardy. This isn't a bug forum.

ShadowVlican wrote on the 1 Mar 08 at 05:29
well good to know it was fixed

about damn time something so simple yet intuitive was looked at

i had to go on forums to read hints like pressing alt+f7 (or something like that) to drag windows around to get to the "next" button

Agreed... Ubuntu put me in 800x600 on the LiveCD so I couldn't hit forward. I had to tinker with the panels and the alt+left click so I could hit forward. It was easier with the alternate install, but it would be best if this problem could be solved within the LiveCD so newer people don't have to get all confused and stuff.

I'd like ubiqity to work from the commandline through ncurses. It seems like this would be easy... I know python ncurses is a pain in the ass to program but this would be nice to have for those of us who *hate* the gui.

It's not enough to say 'many users won't have this problem' or suggest the Alt key trick - you can easily have this on any laptop or desktop if your hardware is not properly detected. And of course the very popular eee PC and similar low-end mini-laptops have very small screens too.

Forcing people back to the Alternative CD is not OK - most newbies will simply give up. I know Linux well but I had this problem on both a laptop and desktop, i.e. 100% of machines I have running Ubuntu at present!

Windows installs quite nicely on 800x600, so should Ubuntu. And in fact Ubuntu should detect 640x480 and work on that too - it's not that hard to do.

You can use alt-left click to drag windows around. This has been a lifesaver for me when I ran into this.
