Idea #2487: Advanced Install Option for Software Package Selection

Written by Egil S the 2 Mar 08 at 15:15. Category: Installation. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
An advanced option during the install process which allows for software packages to be selected or deselected. This would allow either for the selection of additional software packages which could be downloaded and installed during the installation of the OS, or for packages to be deselected, creating a minimal installation. I believe that the Fedora installer has this option.

This idea has been mentioned under other headings, but I think that it deserves to be listed as an idea on its own.

It would be great if the user could select during install a common set of applications for common usage types.

This could possibly also allow install of the "server edition" setup into the same cd as the desktop install (i have no insight of the ammout of duplicate content on "desktop" and "server" cd's, just speculating)

Some suggestions:

* Default Desktop (current "desktop edition" default package setup)
* Media Desktop (desktop edition + more audio & video players, dvb-tools and other configuration utilities installed)
* Developer Desktop (desktop edition + compilers, common ide:s dev-doc and utilities)
* Server (no X/Gnome installed. then offer the server edition choices of default servers being installed, such as dns server, LAMP server, ssh server etc)

Great idea! This is the the biggest problem while installing Ubuntu. +1

I would really like to see this too. I'm currently a Fedora user tired of Fedora's quick-release development cycle and lack of a "dist-upgrade"-like feature and would like to switch to Ubuntu for it's Long Term Support. However, the "bloat" factor associated with Ubuntu is currently my biggest concern.

Regards.

It would also be really cool if packages you installed while using the LiveCD would also install when installing to the harddrive.

Fedora and Sabayon's installers have this feature fairly well perfected (When Sabayons doesent break...) and its an amazing way to get rid of bloat and extra crap (Ekiga anyone?) that never gets used. I would also like to see many restricted items (The restricted drivers etc) included in the selection such that a truly functional system is available on first boot (Getting tired of several reboots to get my ATI and Atheros stuff working!)

First idea i had with ubuntu... and a feature i really miss from previous distros.
It wouldn't even have to be anything complicated. Just list non vital packages and services that are going to be installed and give a Select option to _not_ install said package.

Well said! I think that in todays world where most of us have 8+MBps internet connection (at the very least) its time for ubuntu to release a live DVD for download (not just a dvd with the repos like they already have), and on install you have the standard install that everybody loves and an advanced option install which takes you into a full setup allowing you th choose from many packages, advanced install options (for us geeks) and even shell XFCE, KDE or Gnome why not! Ubuntu + Kubuntu + Xubuntu + many packages and commonly used apps + installer similar to suse 11. +1

Now thats my Ubuntu Dream!
