Idea #2471: Use a mobile phone as a webcam + microphone

Written by cosmotroll the 2 Mar 08 at 13:57. Category: Multimedia. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Use the video capabilities of mobile phones for video conversation with "VOIP" or IM clients (kopete, amsn, openwengo, ekiga, skype, ...).

You would then have a mobile webcam if you use the bluetooth channel :)

It's related to a broader issue: enhance the interoperability between mobile devices and linux.

Could think also about wifi broadcasting.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #2471
Written by cosmotroll the 2 Mar 08 at 13:57.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #2471 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Solution #2: Add smartcam to "Install and Remove Applications"
Written by JJRabbit the 17 Apr 10 at 17:55.
Smartcam turns a phone with bluetooth and camera into a handy webcam ready to use with your PC. At the moment it is difficult to install, so my suggestion is to add it to the Ubuntu software repositories.

bryncoles, the great thing with bluetooth is that adapters are cheap these days (AUD30).

It is a good idea. +1
