Idea #24612: Focus on sound of an application

Written by supercheetah the 29 Apr 10 at 05:52. Category: Multimedia. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Unlike many people, I actually like Pulseaudio, and the power it can give.

One thing that I feel like it should be able to do is to allow me to focus on one particular application, and not worry about sounds from other applications (including systems with volume that cannot be individually controlled). I want to be able to hear primarily the sounds from the application I'm interested in at that time.

Solution #1: Amplify the sound of the application with Pulseaudio
Written by supercheetah the 29 Apr 10 at 05:52.
Take the sound of one application, and allow the volume sliders for it to go to 150% so that sounds from that application can be higher than other applications.

Solution #2: Set the default sound volume to half in Pulseaudio
Written by supercheetah the 29 Apr 10 at 05:54.
Have the default volume for all applications be set to half, and that would allow people to set the volume of the application their interested in to be higher.

I do want to note that the second solution would also involve Pulseaudio. I just failed to put it in there.

It's easy to edit solutions, just click the pencil next to the title. Can you provide a use case? When would this be put in to practice by the normal user? How would the interface work?

Thanks, made the edit.

The interface wouldn't look much different than the current volume manager.

If the first solution is picked, then an application would just have a volume slider going all the way up to 150% (all applications would start with 100% as their volume).

If it's the second solution, then I could see there being in the Playback tab a "Default volume" slider that would control the volume of any applications starting up.

Also, a use case.

For people playing a game, they will likely want to hear just the sounds from the game itself, and drown out the sounds from anything else, including system sounds.

Or, if I'm watching a movie or playing music, I want the sounds from the media application I'm using to be louder than other sounds in the system.
