Idea #24489: Make Ubuntu-ready Notebooks easily available for consumers world-wide

Written by janozaurus the 18 Apr 10 at 20:26. Category: Marketing. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Linux is still a niche player (on the desktop). There are number of possible improvements (discussed here and elsewhere) to make Ubuntu even more attractive, but those technical issues are not holding back consumer adoption of Ubuntu. For most decision makers Ubuntu is not even an option they consider when shopping for a computer because Ubuntu-based products are not easily available in the market.

On the other hand buying a laptop (preloaded with a different OS) and installing Ubuntu manually is non-trivial even for skilled Linux users because of the large number of potential compatibility issues. (see Bugs, stories in the media).

Hence, key to Ubuntu adoption is the available of user-ready products configured with Ubuntu.

Solution #1: Canonical should offer a small set of standard Ubuntu-branded notebooks
Written by janozaurus the 18 Apr 10 at 20:26.
As a first step I propose to publicly announce approved/suggested hardware configurations for a small number of typical usage cases. Let's say: "Standard Ubuntu netbook" has 10inch screen, Compiz-ready graphics, SSD, ...; "Standard Ubuntu 13 inch notebook" has ...; "Standard Ubuntu 15 inch notebook" has ... .

Conduct a global market survey. If products meeting those specs are available (at a reasonable price), promote the vendor. If not, start a company selling those notebooks.

Example #1: US consumers can order Ubuntu laptops from a number of vendors online. However in many European countries there's no such vendor. Selling Ubuntu notebooks in those markets provides great value to the Ubuntu user community as well as a viable business idea.

Example #2: Linux is popular in some niches (science, tech enthusiasts), but not in others. To overcome this divide, we need Ubuntu-based products in brick-and-mortar stores. Therefore promoting Ubuntu through more traditional channels is promising even if the product is more expensive then DIV download from the internet.

There are a few third party retailers who do this, check out System76, they rock. Dell also has a partnership with Canonical to install Ubuntu on their machines. I think you can get a netbook with Ubuntu preloaded ( or moblin )

At the very least Ubuntu/Canonical should have a page that links to retailers websites/products (and i dont mean the homepage).

It is often difficult to find these products on the retailers websites (dell for example) so having them in one spot on ubuntu.com would be excellent. The page would have a lot of potential for growth and improvement.

Canonical could also bundle free desktop support and then offer advanced/professional support for an additional/reduced fee.
