Idea #23939: alter new ubuntu design

Written by kyeldon the 9 Mar 10 at 12:34. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Dear Ubuntu Guys,

For some time now, Multi-buntu is my distribution of (free)-choice.
I admire your thoughts that resulted in your latest "new design brand" called light as said in the wiki.

But more and more people are just having the slight feeling that "your" new design is a "way to close" imitation of the Aqua theme of Apple Macintosh's OSX.

Here you can compare the two UIs together:
http://digitizor.com/2010/03/06/is-ubuntu-having-an-identity-crisis/

With comparing that you'll have to state that a "frappant" similarity (intended or not) between the two exists.

Why I am pushing so hard.
I deeply admired your thoughts behind "human" and the whole ubuntu philosophy. But: With "Light" somebody could think (longterm user) that you skipped your ideals and transformed them into something like mainstream.

Especially with GNOME Shell is so much more possible. Please reconsider this when you launch a "new" Design that looks like the one of a BILLION Dollar Company (Iphone, IMac, Ipad) etc...

Many thanks in advance...

(if some of the point are simply not true (or anymore true) please forget this post immediately.)

Yours truly (from Germany) Andreas_P

Solution #1: Try to figure out something new and not similar
Written by kyeldon the 9 Mar 10 at 12:34.
Because the GNOME Foundation has many good ideas,
just ask them to get some inpiration.

Different Panel Layouts, Different Titlebars (not that similar)
GNOME HIG Guidelines perhaps (integrated into this)...

Solution #2: Change wallpaper and color of the top panel
Written by ricky the 9 Mar 10 at 20:07.
By changing the wallpaper and the color of the top panel, I think it may look sufficiently distinct.
And change the windows buttons placement to the right and bring back the bottom panel.

make the radiance looks more like this:

Just the GTK theme, nothing about global menu and docks. you should try it ;)

Solution #4: Use Ubuntu Studio theme
Written by svtdragon the 17 Mar 10 at 17:42.
Include the Ubuntu Studio theme, possibly selecting it by default: http://ubuntustudio.org/files/US5.png

I've long felt that Ubuntu Studio was much prettier than the default Ubuntu themes.

Solution #6: Get Human theme back!

Human is nice and minimalistic. Why race for some graphical rubbish like Aqua or Aero?

I must say, i've got very similar complaints bout this "new" look from my direct surrounding.
Would you rather stick to the old design?

Ubuntu is growing in popularity and I believe this is due to the philosophy of "linux for humans" being at the center of Ubuntu. I strongly believe this needs to remain a focal point. This include things like, easy to use, accessible, good defaults, secure by default etc. These principals should not be compromised or forgotten as time moves on or for a new shiny design.

But this does not mean the design should not become more shiny if it still adheres to these principals.

I was at an Apple forum and the people over there were saying the same thing - that Ubuntu has copied Mac OS X. I don't think it is good for Ubuntu's image to have people talking about it like that.
Right now, although Lucid has not been officially release, people are already making a big deal out of the similarities. Imagine the reactions when it is released with the current theme.

I agree: the new light theme is a lot closer to what Mac OS X has than ever before: the left-aligned, bubble controls, the top menu bar (and no bar at the bottom), the wallpaper, even the top icons have been adjusted to resemble Mac OS's more closely (the single-color ubuntu icon, the wifi icon, the volume icon, ...).
But if the alignment of the window controls goes back to the right and the bottom bar comes back by default, and maybe the default theme is changed to the dark version, I think Ubuntu will be distinct enough.
I actually like where the themes are heading. Much better than what Ubuntu had before.

maybe linux should stay CLI. :(
the new theme is quite different from the mac or windows ones.
I can't stand those people who say that KDE is a copy of windows because it places the panel down and the gnome is a copy of mac because it places the panel up.

yeah, i want ubuntu, not macbuntu. ambiance looks great (if the button orientation/order is fixed), but the monochrome icons and lack of a 4th window button need to go.

Well, Apple always uses felines in OS X. Leopard, Tiger, Panther, etc.

Now we have Ubuntu Lucid LYNX, another feline, so ofcourse, we must change everything else to OS X too!

/sarcasm

IMO, I think it's the wallpaper that closes the deal, and screams "Look! We're like OS X Leopard!"

So simply changing the wallpaper would make it feel less OS X.

The previous Ubuntu wallpapers that had animals on them were very good brand IMO, so I think using some sort of purple (since that's the color that Ubuntu is gravitating to) wallpaper with a artistic lynx (since that's the mascot for the release), would be much better than just a plain looking purple wallpaper.

A purple lynx on the lower right corner, with the ubuntu logo, and tan, greyish background would work.

(NOT THAT PURPLE, THATS JUST AN EXAMPLE. Yes, I'm aware that's a puma, but like I said, it's an example)

this is a problem, although i dont have a problem with it at all (i've turned ubuntu into perfect copies of mac and win7)

but thats for personal preference when i do an install for someone else, i show them a few options and ideas and i make it look how they want.

in this instance its the default style, and we need the default style to both look good, be functional, and be original, this can be hard to do but we cant have the default style become a lookalike, it will cause tons of problems.

the window buttons being on the left side or right side would copy windows or mac, cant win there, but keep it on the right for simplicity and make an easy option to change it in appearance>theme>customize

the background may have taken it a bit too far, thats purely about looks and when you place them next to each other they are far too similar.

as far as the panel(s) i think it looks similar, but button function is quite different, so i think we're good there.
