Idea #2386: Replace Xsane with Gnome Scan

Written by travist120 the 2 Mar 08 at 04:52. Category: Graphics. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Honestly, opening up Xsane is a little daunting! The first time I opened it up I had no idea what was going on! I didn't know what to choose, or what window not to click, it really was something almost terrifying. I downloaded Gnome Scan from the Add/Remove right afterwards and was greeted with a nice, simple interface, where all I had to do was click scan! It was nice, and I think that Ubuntu should replace Xsane with Gnome scan because it will show a professional / easy interface to deal with. Xsane is advanced and scary to new users, making it unattractive.

While I can understand the way you "discovered" XSANE, I got used to it very, very fast and now I am quite happy about the choice and numerous options that I am offered.

A simple interface will not necessarily be a BETTER one. I prefer to chose my basic file properties (color, color-depth, size, resolution etc) BEFORE creating the file (scanning the picture). We seem to have different ways of doing the same work :o)

Yeah, that's true. But what made me want to have this idea was my Mom's initial reaction to the interface of xsane, she was just as confused. Simple is not better, but simple is simple, and all she wants to do is scan and not worry about the colors and stuff.

I agree that xsane can be frightening at first and I didn't know gnomescan so i just installed it.

The problem is that apparently gnomescan is still in alpha stage.

I couldn't even test it because it crashed with this:
GLib-ERROR **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.14.1/glib/gmem.c:172: failed to allocate 1220757152 bytes

So maybe you'll have to wait that gnomescan matures and reach release before proposing again to include it.

Interesting, because I don't have that problem on any computer I install it on. I also didn't know it was in alpha.

GnomeScan has always worked perfectly for me. Notice that's it's much more friendly-user, much simpler (according to Gnome Policy) than this ugly Xsane. I don't doubt Xsane is really powerful, but 90% of us want to scan a picture, or a simple paper sheet. GnomeScan does the job.
