Description
HAVE AN APPLE MAC OS X DOCK AS AN AVAILABLE OPTION.

I am a OS X Apple, Mac person. I love linux and particularly love Ubuntu. However, as a Mac User I am grown accustomed to and particularly love the "DOCK" that is the most visibly obvious characteristic of OS X.

I switched from lame-ass MS Windows based PCs to Macs about two yrs. ago. Even when I was still using Windows PCs I hated the standard Windows Desktop with its "Task Bar or Task Panel" and all the Application Icons on the desktop, etc. Lame!!!

The "Dock" should be an Option for people to install and use. I know and realize that there are people out there that probably hate the Dock and love the standard Windows Desktop "Look." That's fine. How about giving people the choice, the option.

Humans dont like reading caps.. I DONT LIKE READING CAPS!

The dock has many usability issues actually (I worked at an apple premium reseller as a manager). Many customers use it wrongly, and its not immediately obvious whats going on. Most mac users still dont know that you can drag stuff out of there, and many users still don't know you can drag stuff on. I know this because I always had to spend ages explaining to every customer how to use the dock properly. Just because Steve jobs tells people its very usable, doesn't mean it is. Thats why most mac users these days spend most of their time launching programs via spotlight.

Furthermore, its not part of gnome. In Kubuntu maybe offer a theme as a download, but gnome its not a good idea.

You can already drag programs to the gnome bar, making it more flexible anyway (and a superset of the dock).

But thats my opinion

If you like the concept of a dock so much, install Avant Window Navigator yourself or use OS X. You already have options.

Already implemented.

I'd much rather have a task manager than a bar that I can never find anything on. Expose sucks, and if you have multiple windows of the same program running, good luck ever finding it.

This is what I call a choice - go out there and install a dock! Come on, Synaptic is so easy! Do the devs have to include every package in the repository?

Sorry if this sounded whiny or mean, but Ubuntu is getting way too bloated. And I hate Apple ;-)

OSX this... OSX that. OK OK we get it. Besides it already exists AWN(avant window navigator). I prefer the default gnome panel though. Its simple and sleek.

This is the author of the BRAINSTORM IDEA OF ADDING AN OS X LIKE DOCK:

I've read 6 comments so far and every one of them has some good, valid points. I know and realize an OS X like DOCK will have some shortcomings and issues just like the the "Real" OS X Dock. I have two Macs inadditon to my Ubuntu PC. I just like dock and it just seems that the overwhelming majority of Ubuntu Users and Developers are totally fixed on the standard "Windows" Desktop look. I find it aesthically lacking and productivity hindering.

I think this idea needs a clearer focus, if you type IN ALL CAPS people will vote you down just because they can...

What I interpret your idea:
Make AWN integrate into ubuntu better...
e.g. AWN should default to use nice icons and stuff..

I'm aware you can install awn by hand, but making it look good / integrate is currently not as easy as it could be...

voted down for presentation.

nobody is going to vote for you if you ramble like an idiot

I didn't vote you down for presentation, I voted you down for content. Ubuntu has to remain focused on delivering the most consistent user-friendly experience to the greatest number of users. This means (for now) following some basic conventions that 95% of the population are used to. As noted, this is an option (AWN), and should remain so.
