Idea #23307: Protect Directories from inadvertent deletion

Written by eroberg the 12 Jan 10 at 11:17. Related project: Nautilus. Status: New
Rationale
One is often distracted whilst deleting files or directories (with all their contents).

The Trashcan is a partial solution, but it often happens that it is emptied before the inadvertent delete is discovered.

It may then be some time before you discover what you have done.

If it were possible to add an additional attribute "do not delete" this would overcome this. This could be set in the properties.

If one does want to delete the object, then the attribute would have to be reset first.

Solution #1: Add KEEP attribute for files and directories
Written by eroberg the 12 Jan 10 at 11:17.
When deleting a file or directory, check whether the KEEP attribute is set or not.

If it is set, then display error message to prevent deletion.

Allow move.

If you are suggesting modifying the well established uog/wrx unix permissions, there is no way that is going to happen anytime in the near future.

If you had something else in mind, please elaborate.

What is the problem with reseting the "write" permission (set to "read-only" in Nautilus)?
