Idea #23073: Create an "empathy account" on the web to manage all IM accounts

Written by leandromartinez98 the 21 Dec 09 at 17:38. Related project: Gnome. Status: New
Rationale

We now have many IM clients, as MSN, Yahoo, Gmail, Facebook, etc. Everytime one gets to a new machine, if one wants to use empathy, we need to configure each of these accounts to get all the contacts.

Why not having an "empathy account" which, configured on the web, would bring all these data to the local empathy configuration and synchronize everything?

Solution #1: Create a synchronizable "empathy account"
Written by leandromartinez98 the 21 Dec 09 at 17:38.

One would have all the IM protocols configured on the web on a single site. When using empathy, one would connect to this "empathy account", bringing all the necessary information for all the IM protocols and accounts one has. Therefore, a single username and password would be sufficient for a full IM experience on every new machine.

Solution #2: Intergrate Empathy into Ubuntu One
Written by aliam13_2 the 22 Dec 09 at 11:20.
This is exactly what Ubuntu One is being developed for. By integrating Empathy into Ubuntu One all accounts (and possibly other data such as chat logs) will be synced with Ubuntu One, and thus on all computers using Ubuntu One. We do not need new websites and systems for this when there is a very good investment in Ubuntu One already.

Solution #3: Create a service for that

Create something like "ubuntu IM integrator" that centers all user IM accounts, and give the option to use this with empathy, but is important let the old way in empathy too, let the user choice if want or not use that :)

What about Passwords? Using Solution #2 all passwords of the communication platforms must stored in Ubuntu One, which is not in my favor. A multi-platform client like Empathy synchronised via Ubuntu One is a great idea but should not be done with lack of privacy

I was thinking more as something to have, for example,
if one goes to a lanhouse, or some friends computer. Supposing that empathy is installed there, it would be nice if one could log into the "empathy account" and have all accounts working. I don't see how ubuntu One can fit this, it is not about having empathy configured in my machines, but about having a portable IM configuration.

For example, for any single IM protocol, i. e. MSN, one can, in any machine, log in the account and use it. I was thinking about this facility for a protocol-wide client as empathy.
